I think there is truly something special about this trope. I mean, if you think about it, it isn't at all uncommon to see (in marriage speeches and whatnot) people talking about how the love of their life is also their best friend. And although it's cute to hear, should definitely be far uncommon, why would anyone speed their lives with someone they aren't friend with? Even so, romance stories usually focus on the lovey-dovey, dramatic, and Heath pumping parts of the relationship, and neglect the aspect of the parter being someone you can also fell comfortable with.

However, friends to lovers is an exception to this, the trope usually comes packed with the implication that the characters are friends, people who go read it expect that, and they also don't wish to see that part of the relationship fade, and so the friendship usually gets some focus, even in the lovers, part of the story, also, it leads to unique plot points, like grappling with the transition of how they think about the object of their affection.

TLDR; it's my favorite romantic trope.
