Ranma ½ (2024)

During their martial arts training expedition in China, Ranma Saotome and his father Genma suffered an accident, which in turn, afflicted them with a curse—whenever they are doused with cold water, Ranma transforms into a girl, while his father turns into a panda! Only hot water can reverse these changes, but any further contact with cold water opens the can of worms once more.

Unfortunately, the trouble does not end there, as Ranma finds out about his betrothal to one of the daughters of Soun Tendou, his father's closest friend. During the families' first meeting, it is decided that Ranma is to be married to Akane, the youngest daughter, a decision that is met with vehement protests from both sides. The two are simply not compatible, yet they are forced to live under one roof. Ranma's status quo further adds to the chaos, leading him to a series of comedic situations and misunderstandings that, in the grand scheme of things, may just be what he needs to work with Akane.

I went into this cold; I’ve maybe heard the title before, but ultimately knew nothing about it other than that eye-catching Netflix blurb. It is the most delightful surprise I have encountered in a long time. Shockingly not terrible queer representation. Amazing dynamic of a tsundere couple that haven't realized yet that they're dating. A barrage of unwanted suitors coming for each of them. Everyone in this show is insane in some way. It's also portrays adolescent immaturity in a way that feels startlingly real and without being too annoying. I love it.
Also helps that the English dub is quite good.

Mixed Feelings

Note: This review is kinda just a compilation of thoughts from other reviews that I just happen to share.

The show has an interesting idea. In fact, that was one of the two reasons I even watched it (second, was that it's MAPPA.)
But the writers REALLY needed to come up with better ideas. There were probably only 2 instances where the whole gender swap thing was actually helpful. In every episode, Ryoga or Ranma just NEED to transform for whatever reason. Everywhere they go, there is a water bucket.
Then, there is the fact that side characters don't realize that the two Ranmas are the same. Interestingly ... enough, there wasn't (at least, from memory) a moment in which the characters were like, "Where'd Ranma go?". (Not a side character, but in a similar situation,) Akane doesn't know that Ryoga is P-chan. Though, in episode 11, he LITERALLY transforms IN FRONT of her face. Doesn't notice. What would even really change if she did find out? There would be the typical "beating male up" and calling him a perv, but other than that, what?
One thing I saw in a different review was about the pacing. I feel this the most after episode 3. The whole "Ice Skating Duel" arc was 4 EPISODES. They DEFINITELY could have shortened it. Most of these episodes are just 2-part arcs with this villain of the "bi-week". The series itself did feel very cliche. Yes, it was originally from 1980's/1990's, but I feel as though they kinda brought over some of the bad cliches.
And know, for some just super stupid nitpicks. Halfway through the series, they start opening the episodes with reintroductions to the characters. Sometimes they do it. Sometimes they don't. And why do we NEED to the review? Like, we know what show we're watching. Next, why is Ranma's dad always in panda form? I guess it's for funnys or something, but like, does he fall into the pond everyday and just lives with it?


I honestly expected it to be a bit more fan-service-y. So for those coming for that, lower your expectations, you weirdos.
I actually liked the series until after episode 3. I hope season 2 is better, and season 3, even better.

And now, for something most reviewers actually don't talk about: the OP and ED.
I did dig the OP. Very chaotic and I loved the Chinese theme the music had. The actual song was eh, but the OP mix was good.
The ED was good too. I liked the style it had (it really focused on the almost nonexistent romance between the two MCs) and the song was chill. Not quite sure why Ranma had to continue to pour hot water on his head in that one scene near the end, but whatever.

In my opinion, Ranma 1/2 is an anime filled with nothing but trashy comedy and not at all funny. I didn't laugh at this anime at all. If you did, you probably have a very poor sense of humor. Almost all the characters feel stupid, and there's no meaningful development. There are many cliché scenes, such as the sudden appearance of a random character challenging Ranma to a fight based on his "skills," while the MC innocently and foolishly accepts it. For example, the ice skating scene is utterly absurd.

If you're hoping for romance, you'd better abandon your plans. The romantic element is barely noticeable; ... instead, it feels empty and forced. The character relationships are filled with angry girls who solve problems with punches, which are somehow considered funny, even though they're clearly not funny at all.

As for the action, even though this adaptation comes from a major studio like MAPPA, one of my favorite studios, the execution still feels mediocre. The story doesn't have a clear direction, and the scenes are repetitive to the point of being disgusting. There are actually many similar scenes in other anime, where villains appear one by one and are then defeated, similar to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3. The difference is that JoJo is still enjoyable because it has a unique and interesting power system (Stand), where the enemies come with different Stands and powers, referenced by tarot cards. This keeps us intrigued and anticipating what enemies and (Stands) will appear next. Ranma 1/2 lacks that same appeal. This format reminds me of the old patterns of '90s anime brought into the modern era, which I think is completely inappropriate for Ranma 1/2.

In conclusion, if you're looking for romance, comedy, or action, don't waste your time here. However, if you've watched the classic Ranma from the 1900s, this anime might evoke a bit of nostalgia, and that's its only plus.

rate 6/10 still worth it but not for everyone so not recommended
