Chihayafuru

Always deemed inferior to her elder sister, the strong-willed yet aimless Chihaya Ayase has no dream of her own. In contrast to her, Taichi Mashima, the son of a surgeon, is gifted yet insecure as he is burdened by the heavy expectations of his strict mother, who wants him to be perfect in everything. However, the lives of Chihaya and Taichi soon change as they encounter Arata Wataya, the new transfer student in their class.

Inspired by Arata's dream to become the best at competitive karuta—a card game based on the classic anthology of one hundred Japanese poets—Chihaya quickly falls in love with the game. Refusing to lose to the talented Arata, the prideful Taichi joins along and immerses himself in the game, aiming to one day surpass his fated rival. The three friends spend their childhood practicing karuta everyday, until certain circumstances force them to part with each other.

A few years later, now in high school, the trio finds themselves reunited through the world of competitive karuta. Alongside their newfound comrades and rivals, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, friendship, and romance.

Chihayafuru won the second Manga Taisho award in 2009 and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award in the shoujo manga category in 2011. In 2012, the manga was selected as part of the Jury Recommended Works list in the Manga category at the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival. As of December 2022, the series has sold over 28 million copies.

Kodansha published the first three volumes of Chihayafuru in two English/Japanese volumes under their Kodansha Bilingual Comics line on December 22, 2011, and February 24, 2012, respectively. They consist of the first 17 chapters. The series was published digitally in English by Kodansha USA from February 14, 2017, to June 3, 2025. The manga has been published in Italian by RW EDIZIONI; in French by Pika Édition; and in Spanish by ECC Ediciones.

Three Japanese live-action films based on the series have been released. The first, titled Chihayafuru: Kaminoku, opened in Japanese cinemas on March 19, 2016, followed by a second film, titled Shimonoku, on April 29, 2016. The third film, titled Musubi, was released on March 17, 2018.

Chihayafuru is one of the best works in manga/anime when it comes to themes and character work, probably in the same category as Sangatsu no lion. While Karuta is the central plot device to move the story, the Hyakunin Isshu - the 100 poems, are, subtly, the main drivers of the story. A Brilliant, Unique Concept Dragged Down by Bloated Pacing, Fake Character Growth, and "Cheap Dream" Narratives.
Don't read the manga, but watch the anime.

Chihayafuru is only the second sports anime I have ever been truly invested in, solely because of how incredibly unique the Karuta concept itself is. Discovering this traditional Japanese card game was interesting. The amount of skill, and intensity the anime portrays are beautiful. The first season hooked me, so i continued to read the manga, but it got so boring, un-bearable and frustrating, so I dropped it around Chapter 197 and skimmed through.

My biggest issue is with the overall narrative structure and ... character dynamics. The story is heavily promoted as a story about three childhood best friends, yet it pulls a complete bait-and-switch. The trio is kept physically and emotionally separated for hundreds of chapters. Because they rarely interact as a group, the core friendship dynamic feels frozen, and any emotional payoff feels artificially delayed rather than naturally earned.

The MC Chihaya, becomes more annoying as the chapter goes. She's written with a level of selfishness and emotional oblivion that is completely choking to sit through. Given how talented she is, I wish the author had represented her with more intellect. Karuta is essentially high-speed chess; it requires intense memorization, strategic board adjustments, and psychological warfare. It's unrealistic that someone as completely simple-minded and lacking in basic emotional intelligence as Chihaya could win such a game. Making her a total airhead that robs the audience of an intellectual protagonist. She feels like a superhero who wins purely because of a biological cheat code (her freakish hearing) rather than tactical growth.

The balance between the sports and romance elements is completely BOTCHED. The romance factor is kept so incredibly vague and drawn out that it's so unsatisfying. The love triangle is dragged out for over 200 chapters not because the characters are growing, but because it is used as a stalling tactic to maintain narrative tension. Which effects the pacing nightmare of the manga. The anime works beautifully because it trims the fat and keeps the momentum moving fast, the manga version completely falls apart into a bloated slog. It bogs down in endless, karuta battles that is hard to understand as a non-Japanese outsider. The surface-level breakthroughs or the character development in physical or even psychological skill WASNT THAT DEFINED EITHER. what i noticed was "Oh, she got faster," or "Oh, he's mentally stronger" which fail to provide the clear, structured, and satisfying turning points found in other masterpieces.

The BIGGEST LETDOWN of all, however, is how UNREWARDING the CHARACTER PROGRESSION feels. By the time you reach the later stages of the manga, you are already too emotionally drained to care. The author creates an illusion of progress, but its just disappointing. The ultimate "dream" that Chihaya pursues isn't even her own original ambition, it was entirely built on Arata’s dream. Selling such a cheap, derivative narrative for the main character is incredibly weak writing. How can a protagonist be celebrated for growth when her entire life's passion is just a copy of someone else's? She DOESNT MATURE EITHER. her skills? yes. her mentality? emotional intelligence? THERS NO CHANGE. if there is, it took WAY TOOO LONG. she's too much of a simpleton that my hate for her consistently grew.

Meanwhile, Taichi gets completely shortchanged. Even though he struggles, bleeds emotionally, and pushes himself all the way to the master qualifiers, he is never given a proper, satisfying closure. He is constantly treated as a secondary appendage to Chihaya and Arata’s world.

In the end, Chihayafuru starts with an amazing, high-skill sporting concept but ultimately derails. By failing to give genuine, rewarding closure to its characters and banking on cheap, copied dreams, the author turned what could have been a masterpiece into an unbalanced and deeply unsatisfying slog.

If the author chose the money over the story for sales why should i recommend.....The ending of Chihayafuru feels rushed and unsatisfying. Many promises were ignored, and the story did not close properly. The game became boring, and the final chapters felt forced. After so much time reading, the ending makes the whole series feel disappointing. The karuta matches became repetitive and losing the excitement they once had.
After spending so much time with the series, the final chapters feel forced and careless. Instead of a satisfying conclusion, it leaves frustration and makes the whole journey feel like a waste of time.
