Synopsis

After finding out she is to be forced into an marriage of convenience as soon as she graduates high school, Kokoro sees her life ending before her eyes at her father's wishes. And so in her final year of high school, she decides to indulge in her love of other women, and create an incredible sketchbook of lesbian romance to leave behind as her legacy. As she observes the young women of her town, she learns more about their desires, their struggles, and the unpredictable whims of love.

The cute, shoujo art style is a trojan horse - this manga gets HEAVY. But the tone of patriarchal horror is balanced well with slice of life comedy. The serialized story alternates by chapter with an anthology of twists on familiar yuri stories, which give welcome breaks from the drama of the overarching plot.

Yuri Espoir showcases the suffocating disempowerment of patriarchy inflicted on young girls and how well intentioned men can still perpetuate this power structure, even through inaction. Very original concept.
Kokoro sees two women/girls together, sketches their love story after her imagination and afterwards we get to see a glimpse of the women's actual realities.

Each of the short stories (both the daydreams and the reality afterwards) are very interesting; I'm honestly surprised some of these haven't been used for a stand-alone or a whole manga series. (or they have and I just don't know about it.)

The manga is similar to an anthalogy, and basically is, except it keeps going back to the main story, which is Kokoro's life. She herself is lesbian and has known for while that she has no interest ...

This is a relatively niche GL story, and it currently has 5 volumes or so.

PROS:

1. The story isn't really that freakishly long like One Piece or Hajime no Ippo or Bleach or whatever (by "freakishly long", I mean long to a point that it's more than shocking), so it has a low barrier of entry. Anyone can just pick up volume 1 and try to read it without committing to over 70 volumes of stuff.

2. It features girls/women dating each other, and personally, I think ladies dating each other is not that talked about in media, so it's probably a good thing that Yuri Espoir ... is a GL. But not sure if the representation is accurate, though, since I'm not a lesbian so I don't know. The story seems to be very slice of life.

CONS:

1. The story is quite "slow" in pacing, as in nothing much is happening, so it might bore some people who want actual exciting stuff and not "two people walking down the street to drink at a cafe" or whatever. Unless you call that (very chill slice of life that's basically a flat line since there's not much ups and downs in stuff) exciting, which if you do, you will enjoy this. But you won't enjoy it if you don't enjoy this type of stuff.

2. The story is quite episodic, and there's not really much linear storyline. So if you don't like episodic stuff similar to some parts of Toilet Bound Hanako Kun or early The Apothecary Diaries, you won't like Yuri Espoir. But you will like it if you like episodic stories.

3. It seems to have a bunch of characters that show up for a chapter, then vanish, and don't show up for a long time, and repeat. If you don't like random characters playing peek-a-boo at the audience, you won't enjoy the story. But if you like a big happy family type of cast that nobody stays for long, then you will enjoy this.

PUBLISHING:

1. It typically takes 12 to 18 months for the author (Mai Naoi) to make a new volume. Volume 1: August 2019 (~5 months from debut), Volume 2: July 2020 (~11 months later), Volume 3: June 2021 (~11 months later), Volume 4: June 2022 (~12 months later), Volume 5: October 2026 (~4 years later).

2. The manga experienced a notably slow pacing phase after Volume 4, with very few chapters being released over several years. In contrast to weekly shonen series that produce a volume every 3 to 4 months, digital web series on Comic Ryū Web provide the author with a flexible and slower schedule to maintain their health and the quality of the artwork.

COVERS:

1. Volume 2's cover is a pink-haired character lying down in the upside-down type, which can easily make the reader hold the book upside down without noticing it until they open the volume. There's not much other stuff in that cover, which strengthens the chance of holding the volume the wrong way.

2. There is a lot of pink, purple, and white on the covers. Probably is a shtick of the author. The spines of the books are all white.

OVERALL:

I didn't really enjoy the story. You might, or you might not. Decide for yourself.
