Why is it that when I watch older shows like this, at the end, they always like to take it to other realms n stuff. (lol) Don't get me wrong, Yota did his thing. He was such a good guy and he got the right girl. Ai was one of a kind. You don't see many girls like her anymore. I would ask for a remake but the art style kinda grew on me.
I like it the way it is.

It was a beautiful story. Definitely a classic in my book. (Though I couldn't help but feel there were subliminal messages afoot..)

Well the whole climbing the glass stairs scene would have been better if they didn't directly say it was the pain of love. This series was really something else but I can't help but feel it left things unresolved.

This was definitely a classic. One of the few anime that caused me I step back and say to myself "it was a privilege to be able to watch this."

I have to admit, that picturing love as glass staircase that can break up under any heavier step while hurting the one who's walking on it as result, that was best way to show the abstract meaning behind love, I've ever encountered in years.

Overall great OVA. For its short 6 episodes it was very nice romance story.
I've been deciding between 8-9/10 overall but in the end it's 9/10 not only because it's underrated and also it is pretty good anime even though it's dated short ova.

Agreed.

Loved the first two OVAs. Lively love Δ, character dynamics, and a fitting soundtrack. All went downhill after that; the whole master/creator subplot (which is continued in the manga) was such a mess.

very much enjoyed this show on the whole, though the last episode was a little weird, so in the credits ending, the 2 are living in the video world with their 2 "imaginary" friends? just feels like a bit unresolved like the poster above said :/ anyone read the manga, does it give a more completed ending?

i rarely watch shows as old as this, but its something about this show that has a certain charm to it that seems to do the romance really well which made me really enjoy it ^_^ gona look for some more old romance anime, see if they give the same feeling :)

Yup. Anime is based on first two volumes (and a bit of the third). Manga itself is 13 volumes long (Ai's story) and... it ends like it should.

So much this. I loved the light and funny atmosphere of the first episode, and it looked like they could do something very good with the plotline. At around the third episode I started feeling that something was off, and it just deteriorated really.

tbh this last episode wasn't as bad as I was fearing. The whole abstractism thing had some appeal to it, and there were some interesting moments. Overall though there was too much shouting "Ai!!" or "Moemi chan!!", and the whole "tragic perfect love" where the hero goes through these horrible ordeals, all the while not losing his "determination" or whatever, is something that I don't like.

Yes! If there's something good to take away from this show, it's the great OST's. There's at least five or six songs that are in my collection now ^^ My favourites for now are "Ano Hi ni" and "Kimi no Niji", and even the others are all nice.

Ai's tear turning into TV static was a cool visual, nice touch.

I thought the glass staircase ascent was generally pretty great too, but I agree with one of the posts above that directly stating your symbolism is a bit lame.

I'm really glad that Bennett The Sage made episode on this. I had previously heard of this show but last time i considered watching it the ecchi tag drove me away.

There certainly was more than enough eye candy for fans of that sort of thing but it wasn't for the most part done in away that irked me and there just so much making up for it. I don' think Video Girl Ai is one of the greats because mentioned flaws like explaining your symbolism but it's still a classic very much worth seeing.

Damn. This episode was simply amazing. As I expected it's a bitter-sweet ending. They are together, but in imaginary world of video tape.

How it is possible that such a short anime gave me so many feels?

I don't know how I found it, but whoever recommend it to me: thank you.

Wow, the ending is depressing. A lot. Did they just show they're living inside the imaginary world?

This OVA was quite great in my book. Ai is definitely a remarkable character and this show's a classic.

The ending was a bit confusing as to whether they end up in the VHS world, but what can you expect from a 6 episode anime. Overall,I loved this 10/20 it was awesome I am so reading the manga for this.

I wished for a bittersweet ending over a downer ending, and it looks like I got my wish ;_;
Or is it actually a happy ending? Were the credits showing an alternate "what-if" reality? Or the past? Or maybe the future...? Because then it zooms out and the footage of them all together is playing on a TV screen, in what looks like a "futuristic" room. And to further prove that it is the future, Ai is wearing a girl's school uniform, which she never wore during the show (it's possible that she wore a girl's uniform during the month that she was a video girl and they just never showed us until this ending, though).
It's a rather open ending, but what is for sure is that Youta and Ai were able to spend at least a moment together in a warm embrace, knowing that they love each other.

Well my best theory is that it isn't a fake reality, but a VHS tape showing past memories on future Youta's TV. And I think Ai became a real girl. But it's still possible that it's a "what if" scenario...

I didn't even realize they showed that they were in the TV at the end... now I don't know what to think about the ending. It's the TV in his room too so it's not some BS about the whole thing being a VHS tape for us viewers.

So he just forgets about Moemi and lives with Ai in a fantasy world? I thought the story would be about helping the dude get a real girl. It can't be a video of past memories either unless they have drone technology.

I think they just wanted to have them be together without it having to make perfect sense.

Decent final episode even if probably too open in its conclusion even for me that usually don't mind them. Not sure if i would search for the manga to watch the actual ending even if it isn't too long itself too. Those stairs were a pretty functional symbolism and the main character seemed a little more likable than a lot of other romcom ones. 6-6.5/10 including music, art style and overall atmosphere, it wasn't a waste of time at all but not even the opposite.

What the F was that? Leave it to Japan to take a simple love story and make it into a convoluted, confusing mess at the finish line. I lost count of how many times I've seen this phenomenon happen. All we needed to have had happen was have Yota resolve his love tria square and instead we get him bleeding out while confronting Satan in Clock World inside his VCR. Jesus Christ what an absolute mess of an ending. The first half of this series was really cute and realistic (I don't care, I can accept a girl popping out of his VCR) but this episode took it to such a bizarre extreme it made the whole show feel pointless. No resolution whatsoever to the Moemi situation, or his friendship with Takashi, but now he loves Ai and she's either real, or he's still inside the VHS tape, who even knows. What an incredible disappointment seeing another series with such great potential thrown in the garbage at the very end. I guess the writer/director in the omake of episode 4 was right when he said even he didn't know how it would end. Seemed like he pulled this ending out of his ass just to get it done with in the allotted six episodes. This was so nonsensical and awful it destroyed any goodwill I had of the earlier episodes.

Episodes 1-5: solid 7/10
This episode: 0/10
Overall: garbage waste of time

I like this ending a lot. Yota fighting against all odds in a bizarre nightmare world, climbing up a fragile glass staircase sliced from head to toe with shards and drenched in his own blood, all in order to reach his illusory girl, Ai, the girl who captured his heart before he even realized it... he climbs this fragile staircase to prove that true love doesn't have to be as fragile. And when he finally reaches for Ai and loses himself in her sweet embrace, it only lasts for a moment, before it all vanishes. But there's nothing more complicated than that; no relationship drama, no misunderstandings or lies. No fading emotions. Just pure, dreamy love.
Cut to the beautiful ED song, which shows Ai as a normal schoolgirl, and she, Yota, Moemi, and Takashi are all living happily in an idyllic sakura-petaled neighborhood. One last dream before this great romantic anime ends.

The manga goes on after this. I like the manga, but part of me appreciates the story ending here more. I want to live in this dream.

All this time, I thought this OVA was just an ecchi-comedy-silliness, and nothing more. But it was much more than that. Never did I imagine that this OVA would take itself serious, and it was very nicely written.

Im surprised that there has never been a remake of this OVA with better graphics/animation

The finale of this mini-series was quite the visual trip! I appreciated the explanation of that sharp staircase he was climbing. His love caused him a lot of pain, but it is also the thing that keeps him going.

What do you do when your friend group is stuck in a love triangle that's leaving all of its participants miserable? Well a VHS Tape causing a girl to escape your TV isn't the most common answer! This show was absolutely gorgeous and had visuals that wouldn't feel out of place in an old school PC 98 dating sim. It was also nice to hear Brad Swaile play a genuinely sweet and romantic high schooler for a change.

Things sure got more serious as the show progressed but I found a lot of charm in the characters acting so selflessly. The second episodes post credits short about why anime's don't use accents was definitely my favorite gag in the show.

The ending sure left things open to interpretation. I choose to believe Ai and Touka made it out of the VHS world and are enjoying life with their friends.
