SPOILERS! This OVA was so hard to find, luckily user @Seamasonshire subbed it to english and uploaded it on Vimeo. You can also download the file in the forum thread they put up (thanks dude)
many people complained (rightfully so) that this arc was left out of the anime adaptation in the main series. Luckily, we got in in an OVA form, and I can understand why they opted out for this route, most notably because it contains a sex scene (which did surprise me, we get plenty of gore and comedic nudity in Golden Kamuy, but never something full nsfw), although a (I would say
...
tastefully) censored one.
It's unfortunate that we didn't at least get a two part adaptation of this mini arc, both Keiichiro and O-gin are such interesting characters on their own, and paired together they're THEE power couple. Bonnie and Clyde, but in Meiji era Japan, and utilizing more cold weapons and bloody techniques.
What was interesting to me was how competent this duo was compared to 7th division. If Tsurumi didn't have that machine gun, he'd be dead by The lightning bandit. If Koito didn't save his ass (or more accurately, head) in the last second from O-gin, he'd be a goner.
The reveal in the end that O-gin had a baby with her this whole time was also a nice touch (and by nice I mean it adds to the angst). The 7th temporarily taking care of the baby was funny af, and taking the baby to Huci was an interesting decision. I mean, yeah she is the only person they know of capable of raising a baby, but it's not like they left a good impression on Asirpa's village. Well, they probably did send someone else to deliver the baby there when I think about it. Anyway, good decision on their part. We also got some introspective from Tsurumi on Asirpa during the baby scene. He was also probably reminded of his late wife and daughter. And OMG that final scene where Huci puts the baby to sleep and sings him a lullaby and we get a montage of Asirpa and Ogata sleeping was DEVASTATING ;_;
Too bad we never saw what that baby again in the series
after that roller coaster of action and emotions, we got a little slice of life (in Golden Kamuy standards) Bear Grylls-esque segment starring Sugimoto and a cute little long tailed-tit. This was pretty wholesome (until it wasn't in the end ToT) Sugimoto centered little episode. Imo, The lightning bandit could have used the extra 9 minutes this short took. The long tailed tit part could work as a standalone short on its own. Never the less, I'm glad they adapted these stories
as always, Golden Kamuy delivered. Go watch this OVA, it's awesome
