Yuu Izumi leads a high school life filled with one mishap after another. No matter how improbable the situation, unfortunate events strike him at every turn. In possession of such terrible luck, Izumi enters his second year with a single wish in mind—to spend more time with his affectionate girlfriend, Micchon Shikimori.

Cute, athletic, and caring, Shikimori is immensely popular at their school. But since they began dating a year ago, Izumi has witnessed a surprising side to his otherwise adorable girlfriend: when the need arises, she turns incredibly cool! His misfortunes are easily avoided when she is there to protect him with an awe-inspiring look on her face. Charming in every way, she never ceases to make his heart skip a beat. Unfortunate as he may be, Izumi is sure to see his days of bad luck end thanks to the cute yet cool Shikimori.

Shikimori is a simple but enjoyable experience.
It is slightly unusual in the genre with the fact it actually starts with the main couple together right from the very beginning, although you do see how they get together.
It's pure and sweet in it's simplest form, there's no angst or drama of the sorts. It's purely an incredibly charming girl and her unlucky boyfriend just having an enjoyable time with each other and their lovely friends. The plot is a classic slice of life with them getting into situations and by the power of true love they resolve said issues.
It's not a "it will change the ... medium!" anime however that is not to say it is bad and it is still good and effective and it knows what it does well and does that, it's an enjoyable way to pass a few hours seeing a sweet romance with no issues or drama. Just pure good vibes.

Mixed Feelings

As far as slop romance anime goes, this one's pretty alright. I would absolutely despise this show if the main couple didn't start it being together. I appreciate how some of the episodes focus on relationship troubles that don't stem from any external problems and focus on the characters themselves bettering themselves and getting over their own inhibitions to be a better partner.

It was about halfway through the season when one of the episodes barely had Izumi in it and I realized that I actually hate him and his deku ass dub voice and that this show would be a million times better if it ... focused solely on Shikimori.

Kawaii dake ja Nai Shikimori-san is one of the many anime's that struggles with lack of depth and an uninteresting plot. First of all the characters are bleak and aren't interesting. The only characters that are genunly engaging are Shikimori and Izumi's mom because of their unique attributes and physical traits. The side characters feel bland and don't really make interesting points in the show making them unlikable. A good anime always has to have interesting side characters and are memorable and pose a huge impact to the story. Lastly, Izumi is one of the most bleak characters in this anime with his only attribute ... being his bad luck. Other than that he doesn't have a unique personality and always acts like a massive kid in front of Shikimori showing how irritating and uninteresting he is as a character.

However I'll say this anime has a great art style and decent animation which is one of the only best parts of the show. The main cast have unique physical traits making them eye catching but sadly it isn't worthy because of their bland character traits.
