Paradise Kiss

On her way home from school, Yukari Hayasaka is approached by a weird-looking guy who starts looking at her body intently. He's got blond spiky hair, a spiked choker, and multiple piercings on his ears and face. She wants nothing to do with him, and runs away, only to bump into a very tall and beautiful purple-haired woman with a flower pattern around her eye. Yukari faints from shock and wakes up later in a strange place called the Atelier. It turns out that these strangers are fashion designers who attend the most famous art school around, Yazawa Art Academy, and their group wants Yukari to model for their brand in Yazawa Academy's upcoming show.

Yukari turns down their offer and escapes the Atelier, but unknowingly leaves her school ID behind. George Koizumi, the head designer, later sees it and immediately knows she would be the perfect model for them and will not stop until he gets what he wants—and he wants her. Yukari had never considered something as frivolous as modeling before, but could life among these eccentric designers actually prove to be fun? Or will Yukari lose herself in this world of art and passion?

There is a moment in life when the future that was carefully planned for you suddenly feels unfamiliar. Not necessarily wrong, just distant from who you are becoming. Paradise Kiss is built around that moment. Instead of romanticizing youth as a carefree dream, the series examines the uneasy moment when expectations begin to feel heavier than the life they were meant to secure. The story follows Yukari Hayasaka, a disciplined high school student whose life has been shaped almost entirely by academic expectations. Her days revolve around studying and preparing for university, following a routine that appears stable but leaves little room for personal desire. ... That stagnant routine is disrupted when Yukari crosses paths with a group of eccentric fashion design students who recruit her to model for their graduation project. What initially feels like a bizarre encounter slowly becomes the gateway to a completely different world. One built on creativity, risk, and self-expression over stability and approval. Drawn into their creative world, Yukari begins to see a different possibility for her future.

At the center of this world is George Koizumi, the ambitious and enigmatic designer behind the brand “Paradise Kiss.” George is talented, charismatic, and unapologetically devoted to his artistic vision. But he is also emotionally distant and uncompromising, someone who values passion over practicality. His presence challenges Yukari’s entire worldview. Through him, she begins to experience a life driven not by obligation, but by desire. Paradise Kiss is fascinating because of how the story never frames George as a perfect romantic hero. In many ways, he functions more like a catalyst than a partner. The connection between George and Yukari feels less like a traditional romance and more like the relationship between an artist and his muse. George sees Yukari as the person who gives life to his designs, while Yukari sees George as the person who awakened her ability to choose her own future. Their attraction is real, but it is also fragile because their values ultimately move in different directions. George pursues ambition without compromise, while Yukari slowly learns that independence also means protecting her own emotional well-being. The story subtly suggests that inspiration and compatibility are not always the same thing.

Another strength of the series is how alive its world feels. The narrative does not revolve exclusively around Yukari and George. Each member of the design group carries their own ambitions, struggles, and personal histories. Their friendships, frustrations, and even small victories create a sense that these characters exist beyond the central plot. Because of this, the drama rarely feels artificial. It resembles the messy but meaningful experiences of young people trying to build a life around their passions. Visually, the anime embraces a striking aesthetic that reflects its fashion-centered setting. The character designs are eccentric and stylized, yet never off-putting. Instead, they embody the bold artistic identity associated with creator Ai Yazawa. The world of the series feels vibrant, filled with color, attitude, and creative energy. Fashion here is not simply decoration but it becomes a symbol of individuality and self-definition.

However, the same realism that gives the story depth can also make it uncomfortable at times. George’s personality is often divisive, as his arrogance and emotional detachment can create an imbalance in his relationship with Yukari. Their romance does not follow the comforting structure of typical romance narratives, and some people may find the dynamic frustrating. In many ways, the result becomes the most reasonable outcome. The pacing can also move quickly through certain emotional turning points, allowing some developments feeling pretty abrupt. The story jumps 10 years into the future, offering only a brief glimpse of where the characters end up. The moment feels almost like a closing snapshot. However, considering the series spans only 12 episodes, the brevity of the ending is somewhat understandable. Despite these imperfections, Paradise Kiss remains a memorable coming-of-age story. It doesn’t treat youth as a romantic fantasy but as a complicated stage filled with uncertainty, ambition, and difficult choices.

Ultimately, Paradise Kiss is not really about finding perfect love. It is about the moment when youth collides with reality where admiration, ambition, love, and identity all begin to pull a person in different directions. The series suggests that some relationships exist not to last forever, but to transform us. And sometimes the people who change our lives the most are not the ones who always stay beside us, but the ones who push us to finally decide who we want to become.

Anyway, keep in mind that no opinion is ever purely objective, and every perspective remains open to discussion. Even so, each viewpoint still holds its own value. If you happen to see things differently, simple mutual respect is more than enough. That same respect is the spirit behind this reflection as well. Mixed Feelings

This isn't a typical romance anime, but not being typical doesn't automatically makes it better. Although the anime comes under the genre of "romance", I initially found it to be the most boring plot of the show. By boring I don't mean it is exactly poorly-written; however, the whole thing seemed to be run by lust. Personally not my taste. For Yukira, the motivation is lust as well as a certain "obsession" with George, this puts a great power imbalance between the couple, rendering the relationship toxic. As for George, it isn't clear what drives him to date her, maybe it is that he could ... tame her to be "better" than his mother? But alas, it seems control is what attracts him towards her. So for as long the show focused on this so called "romance", it was an extremely boring event. Despite the complex nature of it, I don't think the show itself makes a lot of efforts to make it the primary focus, if it did the story could have gone smoother. His manipulative actions and her insecurity were a perfect amalgamation of a distasteful love story. This goes on for almost the first 7 episodes; they were so insufferable that it is the first show in which I didn't root for a single character.

However, my rating is contradicting my review. But it really isn't, as the last 5 episodes redeem the show -at least- partially for me. As it started developing the individual characters more and more, especially Isabella (she is such a wasted potential). All the characters have so many quirks, which if were to be explored, could've made this series one of a kind.

But, there is a certain change in perspective that the last 5 eps brings -even though she allowed him to "control" her, there is a positive change that his "whims" brought to her life, and that in itself is a beautiful contradiction. I am not saying that George's motive was to ruin her life, but I don't think he was working in her personal interests as well. What makes their relationship appear more meaningful by the end is that, even though his acts were selfish, she benefited from it. To me, this co-incidence has a charm. But the anime doesn't really set the narration as that, which makes some viewers to actually root for them to end up together. I don't expect the characters to find the same toxicity in their relationship as I do, but the idea of two individuals finding something dynamic at the end of all their interactions, toxic or not, is something that makes their "love" beautiful.

If I see it through this lens, the ending is a happy one for me. After those episodes the main relationship started feeling more meaningful to me, leading the finale to an impactful conclusion. The relationship dynamic became more interesting.

All in all, the characters, setting, sound and animation still makes it worth a try. I just hoped that the anime had focused more on individual character exploration, the show would have easily been a 10/10 for me. It is definitely one of those shows which I will remember from time to time.

This was a massive let-down, particularly after watching Nana, which is honestly one of the more entertaining anime series I've ever watched.
I was prepared for this not to be a masterpiece, but that is an understatement.
Our protagonist is possibly the least relatable character in the history of fiction - and yes, I've read Catcher in the Rye, I have seen the Twilight movies, but nothing compares to this bland piece of flour whose only personality trait is being pretty and hopelessly in love with George. And oh, did you know that she can eat absolutely anything without gaining weight? So relatable, right..?
And oh ... boy, where do I start with George, our own prince charming. He could honestly be interesting, I love myself a character who is absolutely horrible to everyone around them and acts like a spoiled brat, because usually it's entertaining and they get what's coming to them. Or at least SOMEONE is critical towards their awful behaviour at some point. But not George, oh no. Our boy is treated better than a king in the feudal era, nothing our dear George can do is wrong and apparently he is genius along the lines of DaVinci. Who cares if everything he says is no better than a 14-year-old boy whose biggest idol is Andrew Tate, who cares if he is verbally abusive and openly sexist even to his own mother, because he is just SO good at what he's doing. In this universe, dress-making is as essential as curing cancer or solving global warming, apparently, so surely we can put up with his negging and hostility?
The rest of the cast is slightly more promising, but they easily become stock characters and get zero room for development. I have seen more character development for minor characters in South Park, so this is honestly disappointing.
In the end, none of this leads anywhere and you are left just thinking how this was an awful waste of electricity, wasting these hours watching this show.
The only promising parts here is the early LGBT-representation (which was a miracle back in 2005), as well as an interesting outro, but I'd definitely recommend skipping this one. The characters are not awful enough for this to be a complete drama trainwreck, but not likable enough for you to actually care about them.
