Musaigen no Phantom World

Phantoms: supernatural entities such as ghosts or youkai that, until recently, were thought to be superstition. However, when a virus that infects the brain spreads throughout society, people's perception of the world changes as the mythical beings are revealed to have been living alongside humanity the entire time. This virus has also affected those of the next generation significantly, allowing them to develop special abilities that they can use to fight against dangerous phantoms.

Haruhiko Ichijou and Mai Kawakami are two of those that were granted such power—Haruhiko wields the ability to summon and seal phantoms through drawings, while Mai imbues the power of the elements into martial arts. Together, along with the friendly phantom Ruru, they form Team E of Hosea Academy, which is dedicated to dealing with these often mischievous beings. In a world where the real and surreal intertwine, they handle the everyday troubles caused by phantoms.

I only watched this anime because of the "anime crack" videos from back in the day, lol.

Well, I stumbled upon *Musaigen no Phantom World* for a very specific reason: the famous "anime crack" videos I used to watch back then. For those who don't know, these were edited compilations of random anime moments, usually focusing on scenes that were funny, absurd, or simply out of context. Among the many shows featured in these videos, Musaigen stood out mainly because of that scene in the first episode where the characters start dancing, lol. At the time, I found it hilarious, and eventually, I got curious about ... where the scene came from. That’s how I ended up watching the whole series.

Looking back at it now, after so many years, I’d say Musaigen no Phantom World is exactly the kind of anime that works really well when you aren't expecting a masterpiece. It isn't particularly impressive narratively; the story isn't what I’d call exceptionally well-crafted, nor is it the sort of show that leaves a lasting mark due to its depth. Yet, at the same time, it’s a lot of fun to watch.

The animation is undoubtedly the biggest highlight. Kyoto Animation delivers beautiful visuals, featuring well-designed characters, pleasing backgrounds, and, above all, extremely fluid movement. You can clearly see the care put into the animation in many scenes, especially during action sequences and more over-the-top moments. It’s an anime that easily grabs your attention visually.

On top of that, the character designs are very interesting and fit the show's concept perfectly. It features that signature look common to anime from that era, highly stylized characters and, naturally, a fair amount of fanservice. I have to admit that, while fanservice can bother some people, the way it’s handled in Musaigen is actually visually well-executed. It’s part of the series' identity and is often used specifically to create comedic situations.

The narrative itself is also relatively creative. The concept of a world where supernatural phenomena and creatures known as Phantoms are part of everyday life offers plenty of room for episodic storytelling. Each episode explores a different type of situation, usually involving a Phantom or an issue related to the characters' powers. It isn't an overly complex structure, but it works very well for casual viewing.

And I think that’s the best way to describe my experience with Musaigen: casual. The episodes breeze by, and even when the story isn't doing anything particularly interesting, there’s a constant sense of fun. The cast plays a big part in this, as the character interactions carry much of the entertainment value.

I wouldn't call the anime technically impressive as a whole. The animation is certainly above average, but looking at the work in its entirety, I consider Musaigen to be a fairly average anime. It has its merits, but it also has several flaws, and I certainly wouldn't rank it among Kyoto Animation's best works. It’s one of those shows remembered more for a collection of fun moments, charismatic characters, and its aesthetic than for a memorable narrative. And, honestly, I think that’s perfectly fine.

Not every anime needs to be a profound or revolutionary experience. Sometimes, you just want to put something on, watch the characters goof around, and have a good time for a few episodes. Musaigen fills that role perfectly. It’s a show I can easily rewatch precisely because it doesn't demand much from me as a viewer.

In fact, rewatching this anime brought back far more nostalgia than I expected. This review reminded me of the era of "anime crack" videos, those clips completely devoid of context, random anime discoveries sparked by a single scene, and an internet that, in my memory, felt much simpler and more lighthearted.

It’s funny to think that a scene of characters dancing in an anime led me to watch the whole series years ago, and now, so much time later, that same show has managed to remind me of that era. Perhaps that is the greatest thing Musaigen no Phantom World left me with.

It was a lighter time in my life.

So, thank you, Musaigen.

Só vi esse anime por conta dos anime crack da época kkkkk.

Bom, eu vim parar em Musaigen no Phantom World por um motivo extremamente específico: os famosos “anime crack” que eu via naquela época. Para quem não conhece, eram aqueles vídeos editados e compilados de momentos aleatórios de animes, geralmente focados nas cenas mais engraçadas, absurdas ou simplesmente fora de contexto. E, entre tantos animes que apareciam nesses vídeos, Musaigen ficou marcado principalmente por aquela cena do primeiro episódio em que os personagens começam a dançar kkkkk. Na época eu achava aquilo engraçado pra caramba e, eventualmente, bateu a curiosidade de descobrir de onde vinha aquela cena. E foi assim que acabei assistindo ao anime inteiro.

Hoje, olhando para ele depois de tantos anos, consigo dizer que Musaigen no Phantom World é exatamente o tipo de anime que funciona muito bem quando você não está esperando uma obra-prima. Ele não é particularmente impressionante em termos narrativos, não possui uma história que considero extremamente bem construída e também não acho que seja um daqueles animes que conseguem deixar uma grande marca por sua profundidade. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, ele é muito divertido de acompanhar.

A animação é, sem dúvida, o maior destaque. A Kyoto Animation entrega um trabalho visual muito bonito, com personagens bem desenhados, cenários agradáveis e, principalmente, uma movimentação extremamente fluida. Existem várias cenas em que fica evidente o cuidado colocado na animação, especialmente nas sequências de ação e nas cenas mais exageradas. É um anime que consegue chamar atenção visualmente com bastante facilidade.

Além disso, o design dos personagens é muito interessante e combina bastante com a proposta da obra. Temos aquele visual característico dos animes da época, com personagens bastante estilizados e, obviamente, uma quantidade considerável de fanservice. E aqui preciso admitir que, embora seja um elemento que possa incomodar algumas pessoas, acho que o fanservice de Musaigen é até bem executado visualmente. Ele faz parte da identidade da série e, em vários momentos, é utilizado justamente para criar situações cômicas.

A própria narrativa é relativamente criativa. A ideia de um mundo onde fenômenos sobrenaturais e criaturas chamadas Phantoms fazem parte do cotidiano oferece bastante espaço para histórias episódicas. Cada episódio consegue explorar um tipo diferente de situação, geralmente envolvendo algum Phantom ou algum problema relacionado aos poderes dos personagens. Não é uma estrutura extremamente complexa, mas funciona muito bem para assistir de maneira descompromissada.

E acho que essa é a melhor forma de definir minha experiência com Musaigen: descompromissada. Os episódios passam de maneira muito leve e, mesmo quando a história não está fazendo nada particularmente interessante, existe uma sensação constante de que estou me divertindo. O elenco também ajuda bastante nisso, já que as interações entre os personagens conseguem carregar boa parte do entretenimento.

Não diria que o anime é tecnicamente impressionante como um todo. A animação certamente está acima da média, mas quando olhamos para o conjunto da obra, considero Musaigen um anime bastante mediano. Ele possui suas qualidades, mas também tem vários problemas e dificilmente colocaria entre os melhores trabalhos da Kyoto Animation. É mais uma daquelas obras que acabam sendo lembradas pelo conjunto de momentos divertidos, personagens carismáticos e pela estética do que por uma narrativa memorável. E, sinceramente, acho que está tudo bem.

Nem todo anime precisa ser uma experiência profunda ou revolucionária. Às vezes, você só quer colocar alguma coisa para assistir, acompanhar os personagens fazendo besteira e passar alguns episódios se divertindo. Musaigen cumpre muito bem esse papel. É um anime que eu consigo rever sem grandes dificuldades justamente porque não exige muito de mim enquanto espectador.

Inclusive, rever esse anime acabou trazendo uma nostalgia muito maior do que eu esperava. Essa review me fez lembrar bastante daquela época dos “anime crack”, dos vídeos completamente sem contexto, das descobertas aleatórias de animes por causa de uma única cena e de uma internet que, na minha memória, parecia muito mais simples e leve.

É engraçado pensar que uma cena de personagens dançando em um anime acabou me levando a assistir o anime inteiro anos atrás, e agora, tantos anos depois, essa mesma obra conseguiu me fazer lembrar daquela época. Talvez essa seja a maior coisa que Musaigen no Phantom World deixou comigo.

Foi uma época mais leve da minha vida.

Então, obrigado, Musaigen.

Mixed Feelings

tl;dr From an avid KyoAni fan, skip this one lol.

Look, I watch anime for animation. If I wanted a good story, I'd read a book, or watch a film. And that's why I've often said I'd watch anything if it was done by Kyoto Animation.

That being said, this anime definitely tested that resolve. While it's inoffensive, and actually a pretty good adaptation considering that they only had half of a volume of source material, I just wonder, "Why did this have to be made?"

And more importantly, "Why did KyoAni have to take this? Wouldn't this have been better left to A-1 or something?"

Musaigen isn't ... funny enough to be a comedy, isn't deep enough to be a supernatural thriller, and isn't even fanservice-y enough to be a good ecchi. Imo, the mediocrity of this anime has a lot more to do with source material and business decisions than the actual studio, which is a shame considering that it tarnished KyoAni's reputation pretty roughly.

There are some nice visuals, most notably some rare action/fight scenes that got me wishing for a proper combat-oriented title from KyoAni sometime (similar to Chuunibyou). And I'm a big fan of the character designs too, especially how KyoAni took special care to give them each varying heights and body shapes.

Overall though, I'm giving this a 6 for being a 4-5 show with (+1) KyoAni art. Luckily, this show seems to have been a temporary dip for the studio, with great stuff coming out after it.

In episode one of Musaigen no Phantom World, a truly remarkable sequence occurs. The protagonist, a girl, and a fairy are talking on a set of stairs. The girl runs off and trips, so the protagonist dives to the bottom of the stairs, gets near where she’ll land, and turns his body around one eighty degrees midair so that she’ll land on his back. The fairy then lifts the girl slightly midair, causing her to front flip and land just in front of the protagonist, who then sees up her skirt. This really only comes across when you see it animated, it is shockingly difficult ... to describe in text. There are about three physically impossible things that happen in this sequence, coordinated perfectly to deliver a baffling, obnoxiously self-aware fanservice scene. If this were animated differently — by a studio that uses less realistically proportioned characters, and stretches realism more in action scenes — it could look good. I imagine Trigger could make this scene come off as natural. Kyoto Animation is the worst possible choice to animate this. It comes off as impossible, and only makes less sense the more you think about it. The result is glorious — a shameless celebration of fanservice bullshit, in an entirely original form. This is the most interesting thing that happens in Musaigen no Phantom World. The show this scene suggests is incredible, a truly original ecchi anime that leans into the unreality of the genre to deliver hilarious fanservice scenes. This anime is not that show. Anything like this scene only happens once again throughout the rest of the runtime — later in that same episode. After that, it turns into a standard ghost hunting/school club anime. That could have been good too, especially with animation of this caliber. Unfortunately, the writing is such a tangled mess that it can’t even accomplish that.

The premise is simple: a few years ago, a virus was released that caused the entire human population to begin perceiving “phantoms”, basically ghosts. At the same time, babies began being born with superpowers. We follow a school club comprised of these superpowered people, tasked with hunting trouble causing phantoms. That much is fine, but the show insists on placing this basic premise within walls of tortured flavortext. Like, the phantoms aren’t just ghosts, they’re manifestations conjured up by the brain, and may only exist in human perception. I’m here for some overcomplicated window dressing, but this show takes it too far, opening every episode by repeating this exposition, and having the main character spout off random Wikipedia-level anecdotes. These explanations are entirely detached from the narrative. One episode opens on an explanation of Jungian archetypes, suggesting phantoms may be manifestations of them. It then adds the fact that they actually can be literally anything. So why the fuck did we bring up Jung? To be fair, the author doesn’t seem to misunderstand these concepts. This is the one anime I’ve seen get Schrödinger's Cat right. But if they don’t mean anything for the plot and themes, why are they here to begin with? If this was just a quirk of the main character I could forgive it, but the entire show is drenched in this kind of nonsense.

This is, at its core, a slice of life club anime. When the narrative leans into that, and fully leverages Kyoani’s great character animation, it’s pretty good. The mid-section is episodic, with each episode focusing on the main characters hunting a different phantom. During this, there are some good episode plots that dive into the characters' pasts and psychologies. Episode ten — in which that fairy I mentioned earlier becomes human for a day — is a particular standout. There are stretches where the show really works, but not all of these episode plots are built equal. In episode eight, a hot spring populated by horny monkeys appears in the middle of the school, so our main characters spend half of the episode trying to sexually appeal to the monkeys in order to lure them out… and eventually realize they need to paint their asses red to do that… then they find out the leader monkey is recently divorced. It's not all that funny, and it’s too niche and uncomfortable to even work as fanservice… this whole episode shouldn’t have happened.

All of the main characters’ superpowers seem designed to be as lame and confusing as possible. The MC can trap phantoms in his sketchbook by drawing them, and also summon phantoms he’s trapped in the book, but then later he can also summon phantoms without the book for some reason. At first he can only use the trapping ability, but in episode one they introduce a character with an ability that does the same thing but better, rendering his ability completely useless. It doesn’t seem the author wrote these abilities to be complimentary, but rather just made up stuff as they went along. One character is said to be really strong. Her ability involves singing to summon beams of energy, kind of like a less cool version of Inumaki’s cursed speech. In practice, she can fire weak ass beams by doing a goofy ass hum, which is sometimes accompanied by a lame ass incantation. How this ability is strong, or how exactly it works remains murky for the entire season. The child character (who has weird bug antenna looking-ass front twin tails) can make her teddy bear blow up to monster-size and fight, but can also just make it do whatever the plot demands at any given moment. These abilities are overcomplicated, not complimentary, and what they can and cannot do changes constantly. And they don’t even look cool. They suck.

The worst writing occurs in the shoehorned-in two-episode arc that ends the show, but I’ve done enough tedious listing in this review (and don’t want to add a spoiler tag), so I’ll leave it at that.

The visuals don’t quite make up for all this. As anyone can tell from one glance at the abysmal poster and title card, this series is aesthetically confused. Kyoani’s style overrides this design sense in most scenes, but when it does poke through, it looks awful. When it comes to character animation, this show is a treat (like every Kyoani show). If you’re a Kyoani fan, that might make it worth watching, but be warned, this has a bad reputation for a reason. It is not a hidden gem, it does not deserve critical reevaluation. If there was a positive angle on this show I thought was reasonable, I would take it — there’s no studio I’m more deferential to than Kyoto Animation. I hate to say it, but this is just a bad show. The writing is a mess, the episode plots are iffy, the aesthetics are confused, and the animation isn’t good enough to compensate. Only watch this if you’re trying to one hundred percent Kyoani’s catalog. Otherwise, avoid it.
