Denpa as a genre usually refers to Japanese artistic works with themes associated with social isolation, existentialism, insanity that stems from living modern society, and the glorification of otaku/outsider cultures. Examples of denpa in other mediums include the films of Hideaki Anno (Love and Pop, Ritual) and the films of Shunji Iwai (All About Lily Chou-Chou), as well as the visual novel Wonderful Everyday Down the Rabbit-hole.

These shows take place around the same universe, the Science;Adventure universe. Most of those are based on visual novels which basically have more routes and more details about the world and the characters. In my opinion, you should watch them in the following order to have the most fun. Keep in mind that Chaos;Head and Occultic;Nine are not good adaptations.

Imagine you are watching a film. For the most part, it seems like a straightforward drama. However, there are moments that seem a bit... different. Maybe there are unsettling undertones, or scenes with disturbing imagery, or frequent shocking Freeze Frame Bonuses. These moments aren't prevalent enough for you to consider the film a Horror, and yet it also feels wrong to say the film isn't a horror.

Not Quite Horror applies to works that are primarily part of a genre that isn't horror or a closely related genre like Dark Fantasy or Thriller, yet contain enough Horror Tropes to blur the line slightly. This is more than just a single moment of Nightmare Fuel, but less than your average horror work. will often be part of a work that doesn't fall cleanly under any genre or frequently changes genre. Of course, the boundaries of genres are fuzzy and the amount of horror elements needed to classify a work as horror is debateable. Indeed, some films openly combine horror with another genre, such as Horror Comedies. However, works that are Not Quite Horror will often be advertised and classified exclusively as other genres. A Not Quite Horror will have less horror than a Comedy Horror, for example, but more horror than the average straight Comedy.

There are various reasons why a creator might want to include fairly frequent horror tropes in an otherwise non-horror work. These elements of horror can: underscore the mental state of the protagonist; build tension; provide variety; illustrate themes; and so on. If a creator wants to portray a character's Sanity Slippage, using horror tropes (like the aforementioned disturbing Hallucinations) is often effective. If a creator wants to illustrate an Aesop like Drugs Are Bad, demonstrating the horrors of drug-use through, well, horror can be helpful. Psychological dramas (that don't fall into Psychological Thriller or Psychological Horror) are some of the most frequent examples of Not Quite Horror, as they often use elements of horror to portray the protagonist's inner demons.

When successful, these elements of horror can often be all the more impactful, as they stand out in the otherwise non-horror work. However, by the same token, poorly used elements of horror can result in Mood Whiplash and unbalance the work.

Is it real or is it an illusion? Don't trust anyone, you are being deceived! Unreliable narration, deceptive storytelling, and misleading viewers.

Whether it is a fragmented timeline which manipulates the story’s reality altogether, or a twisted way of revealing the perspectives, these narratives extremely challenge our perception of the world.

Seeing the world through the eyes of delusions, madness, or illness paints a completely new picture.
